Borrowing Privileges

Student and staff IDs serve as library cards; community users' cards cannot be transferred.

A current ID card or community user's card must be presented to checkout library materials.

Students must keep their address information up to date with the Admissions Office. (A Change of Address form is available online.) Faculty and staff must keep their address up to date with the Human Relations Office. Community Borrrowers must verify their current address when checking out materials. Failure to receive the notice does not absolve the patron from fines or fees. The Library is not responsible for communications that do not reach the addressee. The library uses campus email for notices. Students, faculty and staff are responsible for checking their campus email for important campus information. Local borrowers receive notices via regular mail.

Users are responsible for all materials charged out on their card. Library cards and borrowed materials should never be loaned to others. A lost or stolen card should be reported to the Library at once to minimize responsibility for its unauthorized use.

It is the user's responsibility to keep track of library materials checked out to them. A due date is provided for all checked-out materials. As a courtesy, users will be sent an email in advance of a checked out item's due date advising them to return or renew the material, but failure to receive this notice does not exempt a borrower from due date responsibilities.

Materials must be returned to the Library in the same physical condition as when they were checked out. Post-it notes, highlighting, and marking in materials are prohibited and damages will be charged to the borrower. Theft, mutilation or detaining any Library materials is prohibited.

Misuse or abuse of Library privileges is considered a serious offense. Various penalties will be applied for infringement of Library regulations. Check-outs are prohibited until overdue materials are returned and/or fines are paid. Library delinquencies will prohibit students from registering for succeeding semesters and obtaining a copy of their DACC Transcript of Classes.

Under Illinois state law, non-return of a library item valued above $50 is considered theft after 30 days, a misdemeanor; if the item is valued above $300, this is considered a class 3 felony. See https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/fulltext.asp?DocName=072000050K16-3  The library reserves the right to prosecute such theft at its own discretion.

Conduct

In general, expectations of conduct in the library are in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct outlined in the Student Handbook.

To ensure that library services, materials and facilities are enjoyed by all, library users will refrain from:

  • Mutilating Library materials by marking, underlining, removing pages, removing binding, removing electronic theft devices or in any way injuring or defacing materials.
  • Systematic or excessive downloading from library subscription databases.
  • Removing or attempting to remove Library materials or property without checking them out.
  • Concealing Library materials in the Library for the exclusive use of an individual or group.
  • Engaging in disorderly conduct or unreasonably disturbing or offending Library staff or users.
  • Harassing or threatening Library staff or users.

Library users are responsible for their own personal belongings while in the library and should not leave laptops, backpacks, textbooks and other valuable items unattended. Library staff cannot be responsible for possessions left unattended. Lost and found items may be turned over to Campus Lost and Found.
