What is Worldcat?

WorldCat

WorldCat is the world's most comprehensive database of information about the contents of library collections around the world. It includes close to 3 billion records for materials from libraries all over the world. And the member libraries (including the DACC Library) share materials from their collections with other member libraries.

As a DACC Library user, you can place requests in WorldCat (or using our Interlibrary Loan form) for articles and physical materials and have them delivered to our library for you to use. Most materials can be borrowed at no charge. If the only available option involves a fee, we will contact you before we place the request.

What won't be shared: eBooks and other digital materials (except for articles). Most digital materials are covered by licenses restricting their use by library patrons to local users only.

Placing Requests in WorldCat

Start searching WorldCat by clicking the box on the DACC Library home page

Type keywords into the search box. WorldCat will give you the option to limit your search for the words only to the title. You can also try switching to the Advanced Search to create searches that are most specific right from the start.

WorldCat is searching more than 2.7 billion records. Use the limiters on the results page to narrow your results down to those that are truly what you want. You can limit your search results to a type of material (books or articles or blurays, for example), those created within a specific date range, or by a specific creator. The limiter options are extensive.

Click on the title in the brief listing to open the full record about the item. You can click the Worldwide Editions and Formats link to see other versions. For example, print books and DVDs often have multiple records in WorldCat. You'd like to find a copy that has a lot of libraries attached to it rather than one with only 1 or 2.

The Full Record will show you all the information about an item. If you're interested in it, look at the Other Libraries link at the bottom. You don't want to select a copy of a work that only exists in libraries outside of the U.S. or one with only a single library attached. Below the Full Record you will be able to see information about other editions and formats that might be better options.

If you decide you want the item, click the blue Request Item button on the right.

Much of the request form will be auto-completed with the information about the item. Complete the information about yourself at the bottom.

You must include your student or staff ID number and you must complete the Needed By information. Allow 1 week for articles (although must come electronically in a day) and at least 3 weeks for physical items.

We will contact you via DACC email with questions or notifications about your request.

Click Submit Request to complete the process.
