Finding Books on a Topic

Finding Books on a Subject

While books are included in basic search results, you can narrow to search for them specifically for book information by following a couple of simple steps.

Begin by using the Library Catalog search index. This limits your results to ebooks and items in the library's catalog. This means you will also see results for other physical materials like DVDs.

Use the Facets menu (Refine Your Results) to further adjust your options.

Selecting "Held by Library" will limit your results to those items items explicitly in the library catalog, mostly physical items.

If you'd prefer ebooks, select "Available Online".

The Subject Facet

Also consider opening the "Subject" facet to see what subject headings are attached to your results. You can use it as a limit to narrow your results.

It can also help you identify additional terms you may want to search. For example, in our search for books about bipolar disorder, if we look at the Subject list we see that there are multiple headings for Manic Depressive Illness, an alternate term for the disorder. It would be worthwhile doing a separate search using this term because you may find other useful sources.

Once you find a book of interest in the library's physical collection, place a request to have it retrieved.

And finally, don't forget that you can broaden your search to books in other libraries by switching to the the I-Share search index. You can then request items from these libraries with I-Share Requesting.

Reference Resources

If you need a "book" source, you also consider reference resources.

Reference entries are from encyclopedias, almanacs and dictionaries. Most of these are e-resources. EasySearch lets you search specifically for entries within reference works.

Start with a basic (All Library Resources) search. Then select Source Type from the Facets (Refine My Results) menu. Select Reference Entries.

Use the Source Type facet to select Reference Entries
