Reading Lists: A Practical Guide

Add Items to a Reading List

Adding items to a list is very easy. You can add items in 4 different ways and move them between sections.

Items from the library

If you know of an item in the library's collection that you want to use, click on +Add and Select Search the Library. Search by using the title of the item you want.

Click +Add and select Search the Library

The Library Recommends:

Explore the library's collection using EasySearch and then search in Reading List by title for the items. With EasySearch you can take advantage of the search facets to refine your search results to find items more precisely. The Reading List search does not permit the use of filters to narrow a search or allow you to see the full record for items so you can see more information. Create a Favorites List in EasySearch, and send it to yourself to have on hand in Reading List.

Click on an item title or the + button in the results list to add an item.

Click on the + symbol or the title of a result to add the item to a list

Choose the appropriate Section.

Click the arrow to select the week or section to add the item to

Click ADD or ADD & EDIT. You can also edit an item once it is in a week or section by clicking the item title to open it.

Edit allows you to add tags and notes and due dates. Tagging is how you can trigger a Purchase Request.

This is also where you can place a Digitization Request to have the library scan a chapter of a print copy. Digitization requests must meet appropriate copyright guidelines.

Add notes for students or due dates.

Tags let you specify whether a reading list item is Essential, of potential interest, a choice out of several, or an extra credit option.

Add tags to tell students whether a reading list item is essential, an option, extra credit, or just recommended.

Upload a File

If you have something in a file that you want to add to your list, start by selecting Upload a File. Then drag or browse for the file to add it.

Select Upload Files on the +Add menu          then        Drag or browse to upload a file

The Library does check whether uploaded files meet college copyright requirements. Uploading files is most suitable for materials you have created yourself or have direct permission from an author (such as a former student) to use. When getting permission from others to use their work, make sure to keep a written copy of their permission in your files.

Items from Your Favorites -- Using Cite It!

Your Favorites are a collection of items you compile from the library's collection or find online.

Add items from the library's collection by selecting Add to Favorites from the item information in the Reading List Search the Library results.

Select add to Favorites in the Search the Library item options

Add items to your Favorites using the CITE IT! tool. If you find something you might want to include in one of your courses while browsing online, simply click the CITE IT! link on your bookmarks bar. (You can also use CITE IT! to add items directly to a specific list and section.) Please note, not all web sites will permit CITE IT! to function depending on coding. If it won't work, you can add web pages with Manual Entry (see below).

To add the CITE IT! tool to your Bookmarks bar, click on Settings icon in Reading List . Click on Cite It! to open the instructions. From the instructions, drag it the Cite It! button to your bookmarks bar on your favorite browser.

Click on Settings and then Cite Itwhen the instructions open Drag the button from the Cite It! instructions up to the browser bar.

If you want the Library to purchase a book or DVD, use CITE IT! to capture the book information from Amazon and add it to your list. You can also use CITE IT! to link to YouTube videos, web sites, library databases, Noodletools, or social media posts. The only thing to watch out for is articles that may go behind a paywall after you capture them, such as online articles on news or magazine sites.

Watch the CiteIt! Video.

Manual Entry

Manual Entry lets you add any type of resource. You can use it to upload files, upload web pages by uploading a URL, or get the library to help you track down a citation or chapter to use in your course.

In +Add list, select Manual Entry.

Click Type and select your item's type from the list. Add a title and then click Next.

NOTE: If you need the library's help tracking down a source, you can use the form to provide as much information as you have about a resource and the library will attempt to identify the item and make it available.

Move and Delete Items

If you need to move an item to another section, or delete it from your list, use the More Options menu (the three dots on the far right of the item information).

Move your mouse to the top right corner of the item information to make the item options appear. Click on the three dots to open the menu.
